STONINGTON BREAD FEST The Velvet Mill | June 7 2025

Welcome to the stonington Breadfest

Stonington BreadFest is a one day celebration of grains and all that can be created from them. Located in the historic Velvet Mill, it will bring together bakers, millers, brewers, and enthusiasts to share knowledge, ideas, and our passions. Whether a professional or home baker, this festival will unite our community in an effort to learn from each other and improve our skills.

Stonington BreadFest is organized by Masa and Meryl Bakery. Any proceeds from the festival will go towards the Pawcatuck Neighborhood Center and the New London Community Meal Center.

Calling all bakers! Stonington BreadFest is hosting friendly competitions to crown this year’s best cookie and sourdough bread! The contest will be held Saturday, June 7 between 11am and 2pm.

Whether “professional” or home baker, anyone is welcome to enter a category! The only restriction is applied to the “best cookie” category that is limited to those under 15. The deadline to apply is Wednesday 6/4 at 10pm. Each entry costs $10 and goes towards covering the cost of the festival. Please bring 90-100 samples of your item. We recommend making about two dozen individual baked goods and cutting them into smaller pieces (for example, one cookie cut into four portions). Four servings will be set aside for the judges and the remaining portions will be available for samples. There will be prizes! Judges will select a Judges’ Winner in each category and those attendees who sample will vote for a People’s Choice Award.

Categories:

  • Best Cookie (kids’ category) Open to anyone under 15! Cookie entries can be any flavor and include no more than two inclusions (e.g. chocolate chips, nuts, etc.). Our judges will consider the flavor, execution, and technique of the cookies.
  • Best Sourdough Bread Open to everyone! Any flour choices are welcome, but please refrain from using any add-ins (such as cheese, seeds, nuts, etc.). All sourdough bread entries should be baked in a boule (round free-form loaf) and be risen with a sourdough starter instead of commercial yeast. The flavor, execution, and aesthetic will be taken into consideration during judging.
  • Bundt Cake Open to all! Any kind, flavor, decoration, and shape will be considered. Creativity, flavor, execution, and appearance will be judged.
